Homemade Soda

What do librarians do for fun on the weekends?  Well, clearly that depends on the librarian. But for me, messing around with stuff in the kitchen, then inviting friends by to taste the results is a fine way to spend a Saturday night.  You think I’m talking about dinner, don’t you?

Not exactly.  This time, I’m talking about soda.  This book, Homemade Soda by Andrew Schloss (641.875 Sch395), inspired a soda tasting party that included both home-brewed sodas and the strangest commercial sodas our guests could find.

Home-brewed soda is not as hard as it seems.  Some interesting fruits, roots, herbs, even vegetables can make lovely syrup. You add a little brewer’s or champagne yeast, give it a few days to fully carbonate, then chill until you’re ready to serve.  Delish.  We tasted all kinds of soda, some delicious, some odd, some downright nasty (blech!). Give it a try.  Make some soda, invite good friends, and have a party.  You won’t regret it.
