Elijah of Buxton

content.chilifresh-1Elijah of Buxton by Christopher Paul Curtis

Life in Buxton, a small village in Canada founded for escaped slaves, is seen through the eyes of Elijah, the first child born free in the settlement. Eleven-year-old Elijah is clearly drawn, as are the others who populate the town. Humor is present, but the underlying tragedy of slavery is always near and is poignantly brought to the forefront by the book’s concluding scene.
