Based on the novel by Nevil Shute, this outstanding 1981 Masterpiece Theatre miniseries tells the story of ten years in the life of Jean Paget, a British woman living in Malaya during World War II. It follows her experience as the war started, and later as she was taken as a Japanese prisoner of war. Finally, it concludes with her post-war experiences in helping the people who earlier saved her life. The novel on which the film is based was included on the Modern Library’s “The Reader’s List of the 100 best English-language novels of the 20th century.” The author, Nevil Shute, based his characters and their experiences on real people he encountered while visiting post-war Sumatra and Australia.
