Heiress Nicole Bonnet (Audrey Hepburn) has been reluctantly keeping her family secret for years. Though her family owns a famous art collection, her father (like his father and grandfather before him) delights in making forgeries and passing them off as the originals. When her grandfather’s forgery of the Cellini Venus is put on display, Nicole enlists the help of apparent art thief Simon Dermott (Peter O’Toole) to steal it before forensic tests can be performed and the family lie revealed.
Though not the best known of Hepburn’s work, How to Steal a Million is a delightful caper film that holds a 100% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes. With a playful soundtrack by John Williams, a deliciously mod wardrobe for Hepburn by Givenchy, a clever screenplay by Harry Kurnitz, and charming performances by Hepburn and O’Toole, this is a classic worth watching.
