Mothering SundayMothering Sunday: A Romance, Graham Swift

Mothering Sunday, by Graham Swift is a haunting novella centered on one day in the life of Jane Fairchild, an English maidservant.  Traditionally, servants were given the day off on Mothering Sunday, the fourth Sunday of Lent, to visit their families. Jane has considered spending the day alone with a book, but instead, she joins her lover, the wealthy son of neighbors who is engaged to be married in two weeks’ time. Realizing it will be their last time together, Jane lingers in the home where they have secretly met, and, in flashbacks and flash forwards, sees how this moment has come to be and has shaped her future. – Evelyn
