Looking for a New Year’s flick to ring in 2017? You’ve probably already seen When Harry Met SallySleepless in SeattleBridget Jones’ DiaryAn Affair to Remember, and any number of other chick flicks set around New Year’s Eve. Those are all great options, but if you’re wanting something a little more, well, adventurous, look no further than The Poseidon Adventure. In this 1972 film, unsuspecting passengers aboard the luxury cruise liner S.S. Poseidon face disaster when a tidal wave capsizes the ship on New Year’s Eve. It’s Titanic meets the holidays, making it a film best enjoyed on dry land. By the end of its release year, The Poseidon Adventure was one of the six best selling films to date, alongside classics like Gone With the WindThe Godfather, and The Sound of Music. This sometimes forgotten disaster classic features an Academy Award-nominated score by John Williams and also received Oscar nods for Best Picture and Shelley Winter’s supporting actress performance.
