Picking a book for your book club can be a daunting task. Sometimes it’s hard to find a title everyone hasn’t already read, or it might be difficult to track down enough copies for all the members. Or maybe you’re a bit paralyzed by the fact that everyone will need to buy a copy of a book you picked—and what if they hate it?
If you belong to a book club or are considering starting one, the library has a great resource to help make your book club run more smoothly: our book group collection. This collection has nearly 200 sets of 12 books for groups to check out. Most titles also include a discussion guide to help you facilitate conversation, and the sets check out for six weeks to accommodate most groups’ schedules.
You can click here to see an annotated list of the titles in the collection. It’s an eclectic bunch: memoirs, biographies, short story collections, nonfiction about science and history and animals, not to mention plenty of novels. We’ve got lots of genres covered, too, including science fiction (try Doomsday Book by Connie Willis or The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood), fantasy (like The Goose Girl by Utah native Shannon Hale), history (Dancing at the Rascal Fair or Etta and Otto and Russell and James are both great choices), young adult books (titles like We were Liars and The Running Dream will spark some great discussion), and gentle reads (like Jean Kwok’s Girl in Translation and Wallace Stegner’s Angle of Repose).
Book group sets can be scheduled up to six months in advance (and some books fill up fast). To schedule a set, visit the library’s website; under “My Library” you’ll find “Book Groups” and “About Book Group.” Here you’ll find information about scheduling book group sets, including a link to the calendar and the reservation form. Check the calendar (it’s updated every Tuesday) to see if the title you want is available when you need it, and then fill out the reservation form. A librarian will get back with you soon. Or you can always call the Reference Desk at 801-229-7175 to get help with our book group collection.
